Wireless Network Components – Basics of Any Wireless Network

Client Software and Adapter

Any client computer, laptop or wireless device with a compatible wireless client adapter allows connectivity with an access point. The client adapter is a radio transmitter with firmware that supports any of 802.11a/b/g signaling. That is needed before the device can associate and authenticate with the access point. Some access points have a no client mode that doesn’t allow any association from clients extending network distance. Client wireless software included with the adapter must be implemented with specific Windows platforms. The client adapter will be integrated with the laptop, PCMCIA slot or desktop PCI bus slot. They will support specific wireless standards, antenna characteristics, WiFi certification, WDS, network range and security. The wireless manufacturer software must be implemented for all available features. The following is a list of some client adapter configured settings.

Access Point (AP)

As the name suggests an AP (access point) allows connectivity between the wireless client or wireless device and the wired network. The AP takes wireless data packets from a client and translates them to standard Ethernet data frames before transmitting across the wired network. Standard category 5 twisted pair cabling will connect the AP point Ethernet port with a catalyst switch Ethernet port. The maximum distance between access point and network switch is 100 meters standard with Ethernet design.

WLAN Controllers

Wireless designs with hundreds of root APs on an enterprise network will sometimes deploy wireless LAN controllers. The design specifies lightweight APs connecting to a network switch. The 4404 WLAN controller device acts as a hub connecting 4 network switches supporting 100 access points. Cisco wireless control system (WCS) wireless network management software is sometimes deployed with WLAN controller design for planning, configuring and optimizing the network. Continue Reading

How To Upgrade Your Hard Drive Without Data Loss

A hard drive upgrade is now a common upgrade undertaken on both desktop and laptop computers. Usually it is recommended that you completely reinstall the operating system on the new drive for the cleanest of installs but this is not always wanted or possible and in these case you can clone your current hard drive to your new drive. The benefits of this are

  • There is no need to reinstall software
  • No need to reinstall the operating system
  • Your drive is cloned but the space available increased

There are a few things that should be noted.

1. You can’t clone a larger drive to a smaller drive. For example if your current drive is 250GB you cannot clone it to a 200GB drive for obvious reasons.

2. There are many free software programs out there that let you clone like for like (250GB to 250GB) but those that do let you clone from a smaller drive to a larger drive can be more complex.

Free Software Vs Non Free Software

There are a number of free tools out there that can clone your hard drive but many of them can be complex to use or don’t clone the smaller drive to a larger drive they only do like for like copies. You can find tools like clonezilla or easeus disk copy will do a disk clone very well.

In my experience there are a couple of non free programs out there that I have used in the past that makes this task easy and pain-free without having to have a wealth of technical knowledge.

Acronis True Image Home

True image is not only a tool you can use to clone your hard drive it is also a fully featured backup suite.

The clone tool in the program allows you to make a duplicate copy of your drive to a drive of equal size or a larger drive. When cloning to a larger drive the software adjusts the free space to use all available space on the new drive.

Norton Ghost

Another tool that is very popular and effective when cloning a drive is Norton ghost which can be purchased from Norton website. Norton Ghost has a feature called copy my hard drive which clones an exact copy of your current drive.

Cloning Vs Reinstalling

I believe if you have the windows installation disks and product keys for your software your best option is always to reinstall the operating system rather than clone your hard drive.

The reasons for this are simple. You will get a lot cleaner install from a re-install then you will from a hard drive clone. While cloning the hard drive with some software is easy and works great they are never 100%. By installing a clean version of your operating system you are giving your computer and new hard drive a fresh start.

How to Detect Keyloggers on Your Computer

In a world where huge amounts of information are held on computer systems, it is vital to be able to keep information as secure as possible. This can often be compromised when people find ways to hack into systems and steal confidential information.

One such way that this is often done is through the use of a keylogger, which is a piece of software that captures every letter typed on a computer keyboard and then sends it to a third-party, usually either by email or by storing the information on the computer itself for the hacker to collect later.

To stop this from happening to your system, the best way is to ensure that you have up-to-date antivirus software installed and update it regularly. Also, it is good idea to run a virus scan should you notice anything unusual with your system, for example if it is suddenly running at a slower rate than normal. Continue Reading
